Built by People Who Believe in a Better Later Life
Sabai Jai began with a simple conviction — that older adults deserve a home environment as rich, warm, and full of possibility as any other chapter of life.
Back to HomeThe Heart Behind Sabai Jai
Sabai Jai — meaning "comfortable heart" in Thai — was founded in 2018 by a small group of people with deep roots in Koh Samui and a shared frustration with how little the island's extraordinary setting was being used to serve older adults well. What existed locally was either clinical and institutional, or simply absent.
The founders spent two years designing a community from first principles: What does a thoughtful older adult actually want from a residential community? What does connection look like when daily routine is no longer shaped by work? How does independence coexist with a real sense of belonging?
Sabai Jai opened its doors in early 2020 with a modest number of residences and a clear mission. Today, the community has grown steadily — word of mouth, primarily — and continues to be shaped by the people who live here and the team that looks after them each day.

Our Mission and Values
Every decision at Sabai Jai traces back to these core beliefs about how people deserve to live.
Dignity in Every Detail
From how we set a table to how we greet a new resident, small gestures matter. Dignity is not an aspiration — it is a daily practice.
Living With the Island
Koh Samui's natural setting is not a backdrop — it is central to how we design community life. Gardens, sea air, and the island rhythm all play a role.
Community Over Institution
We are a home, not a facility. This distinction shapes everything — from how spaces are designed to how our team talks with residents.
Our Core Team
A small, experienced team committed to making Sabai Jai feel genuinely like home.

Quality, Privacy & Care
We hold ourselves to a consistent standard — because the people who live here deserve nothing less.
Personal Privacy
Resident information is handled with full confidentiality. Community life is warm and social — but individual privacy is never compromised.
Food Safety & Quality
Our kitchen follows strict food handling standards. Menus are reviewed seasonally, with dietary needs and preferences noted for each resident.
Housekeeping Standards
Residences and shared spaces are maintained to a high standard daily. Housekeeping schedules are adapted to each resident's preferences.
Safety & Infrastructure
All residences meet Thai building safety standards. Emergency procedures, accessible pathways, and staff first-aid training are in place.
Open Communication
Residents and families are encouraged to share feedback at any time. Annual residency reviews provide a structured space to reflect and plan together.
Community Standards
Sabai Jai is affiliated with the Thailand Senior Living Association and adheres to its voluntary code of practice for non-medical senior residences.
Island Living for Active Older Adults on Koh Samui
Sabai Jai occupies a distinct and considered position within the landscape of senior living options in Southeast Asia. Unlike large-scale international retirement developments or medically managed aged care facilities, our community centres on what matters most to active older adults who remain fully independent but value the support, warmth, and structure that a thoughtfully managed community can provide.
Koh Samui offers a remarkable environment for this kind of living — a tropical island with a well-developed infrastructure, accessible international airports, a broad range of local medical facilities for those who need occasional support, and a community character that has long attracted long-stay international residents. Bophut, where Sabai Jai is located, is one of the island's quieter, more residential areas — close to the sea and local markets, yet removed from the more tourist-facing parts of the island.
For older adults from Australia, Europe, North America, and across Asia, Sabai Jai represents a carefully maintained alternative to ageing in place in isolation. The appeal is not luxury — though our residences are comfortable and well-appointed — but rather the combination of a rich natural setting, a consistent social structure, and a team that genuinely cares. Our residents often describe Sabai Jai less as a residence and more as the community they wished had existed for years.
